API History

API Heat Transfer brings together 150 years of thermal engineering excellence from industry-leading brands across three continents. From Schmidt-Bretten’s plate heat exchanger innovations beginning in the 1880s to Basco’s ASME-coded shell & tube expertise and General ThermoDynamics’ integrated cooling systems, each acquisition has strengthened our ability to solve the world’s most complex thermal challenges.

History Line

1879

Schmidt is founded in Bretten, Germany as a pioneer in the heat transfer industry

1884

Coventry Radiator (later becomes Covrad Heat Transfer) is founded in Coventry, UK

1919

Serck Radiators Ltd. (later becomes Serck Heat Transfer) is founded in Birmingham, UK

1947

American Precision Industries is founded in Buffalo, NY, USA

1953

Basco is founded as a manufacturer of shell and tube heat exchangers in Buffalo, NY, USA

1962

American Precision Industries acquires Basco to form what is now API Heat Transfer

1969

Thermal Transfer Products is founded in Racine, WI, USA

1971

Thermal Components, Inc. is founded in Montgomery, AL, USA

1972

General ThermoDynamics (later acquired by Thermal Components) is incorporated in Franklin, WI, USA

1984

Thermal Components is acquired by ThermaSys Corporation

1987

ARUP (tubing manufacturer) is founded in Dortmund, Germany

1996

API Heat Transfer opens the Airtech facility in Arcade, NY, USA

1997

ThermaSys acquires ARUP.
API Heat Transfer acquires Schmidt.

1998

ThermaSys acquires Thermal Transfer Products

2004

API Heat Transfer enters Asia-Pacific with a manufacturing center in Suzhou, China

2006

The Suzhou facility doubles in size and begins manufacturing all product lines

2009

The Buffalo facility expands and adds additional manufacturing capability

2010

ThermaSys acquires the Covrad and Serck Heat Transfer companies

2011

API Heat Transfer and ThermaSys Corporation merge.
A second manufacturing facility opens in Suzhou, China.

2012

His career spans leadership roles at Xylem, Kinetek/Nidec, Danaher, and General Electric, giving him deep expertise in operations, supply chain, and commercial growth. At API, he is driving a focused strategy to accelerate growth momentum, enhance product innovation, and strengthen the company's position as a world-class heat transfer solutions provider. He is a Six Sigma Black Belt and a proud alum of Purdue University.

API Schmidt-Bretten is a critical hub for plate heat exchanger design and manufacturing, serving industrial, power, and process markets worldwide. She has held progressive leadership roles spanning Quality Assurance, Engineering, Operations, Lean Manufacturing, and Project Management. In her most recent positions, Carrie has led global operational excellence initiatives, strengthened management operating systems, and developed project planning tools to drive growth and execution across multi-site organizations. Her expertise in Lean Six Sigma, APQP/PPAP, ISO/IATF systems, and cross-functional leadership positions her as a key partner in ensuring API delivers reliably for complex, high-stakes customers worldwide.
