Why Leading Frac Operators Are Replacing Horizontal Cooling Modules with API's Cube Design

After time in the field, traditional frac pumper cooling modules get grimy, heavy, and inefficient — and when cooling fails, engines fail. API Heat Transfer's compact cube cooling module delivers higher efficiency, lighter weight, safer cleaning, and a longer service life. It's not just an upgrade. It's a smarter way to keep your fleet running.

The Hidden Cost of "Standard" Cooling

In frac applications, cooling modules work hard — and they get dirty fast. Dust, mud, and debris from the field clog heat exchanger cores, sap efficiency, and put serious strain on the engine. If the coolers aren't cleaned properly and regularly, that strain compounds over time, ultimately leading to engine failure.
The problem with traditional horizontal cooling modules isn't just performance — it's maintenance. Cleaning a horizontal unit means climbing under it, climbing on top of it, and working in positions that are awkward, time-consuming, and potentially unsafe. For field crews managing a fleet of frac trucks, that's an operational liability.

Callout Box – "Each Neglected Cleaning Meant:"

  • Reduced heat transfer efficiency
  • Undue strain on the engine
  • Compromised pump performance
  • Risk of premature engine failure
  • Costly unplanned downtime on the frac site
  • Unsafe maintenance conditions for operators

A Smarter Design — Built for the Field

API Heat Transfer engineered its cube cooling module from the ground up for frac applications — prioritizing efficiency, durability, and ease of maintenance in the environments where these units actually operate.

Cab-Side Access Door

Clean It in Minutes. From the Ground.

API's cube cooling module includes a custom-designed cab-side access door — a feature exclusive to API's cube design — that transforms how field crews clean and maintain the unit.

"When you clean a horizontal unit, you have to climb under it and on top of it. With a cube, you can just stand outside with a hose, open the door and spray inside for cleaning."

— Mohammed Sherid, Business Unit Manager, Energy, Power Generation & Engine Cooling Division, API Heat Transfer

The door provides full access to all internal components — including the heat exchanger cores — without climbing or repositioning. Routine maintenance and plumbing are simpler and safer for the operator.

Vertical Core Mounting

Built to Resist What the Field Throws at It

Unlike traditional horizontal modules where cores lie flat and collect debris, all coolers in API's cube are mounted vertically. This orientation means dust, mud, and hail are far less likely to accumulate on and damage the heat exchanger cores — protecting the unit's performance and extending its service life between cleanings.

All-Aluminum Construction

Lighter. Stronger. More Corrosion-Resistant.

API's cube cooling modules are built entirely from aluminum — using aluminum bar plate and/or tube bar (Tbar) heat exchanger technology for maximum thermal efficiency. Compared to traditional units with copper brass cores and steel tanks, the all-aluminum cube is:

  • Up to 20% lighter in weight — reducing load on the truck frame
  • More durable — aluminum outperforms steel in harsh field environments
  • Naturally corrosion-resistant — extending equipment life without additional treatment

The Results

More Uptime. Lower Operating Costs. Safer Maintenance.
